Lesson 1
Your first project (Project- 50 points) Check out the Figure promotional video from Propellerhead Software. If you want, you can check out the online documentation provided by the developers of Figure. As you can see, this app is a fantastic way to get your feet wet in the world of music technology as it requires no formal music training to get a decent beat, bass line and lead together. The interface is simple, and I find it quite intuitive. Once you get the hang of it, you'll find a few surprises too. The purpose of my video, and this lesson is to get you to put together a quick project and post it to your SoundCloud account without getting bogged down with too many technical terms and music theory. We have the whole semester to do that. For now, let's explore Figure and have fun. Since this is probably your first project for class, I'd like to remind you that the title of your project is very important for your grade. If I don't know what project I'm listening to, I can't grade it with the correct criteria. Lesson 2
The Song Tab There is a short quiz at the end of this video (50 Points) Now that you know how to put together a quick project in Figure, we can start going a little deeper into Figure's features. By the end of this lesson, and you'll be able to use the features in the Song Tab to change the song length, tempo and shuffle settings. Lesson 3
Tonality There is a quiz at the end of this lesson (50 Points) This is after all a MUSIC technology class, so in this lesson we explore a little bit of music theory. Sure, you could go on using Figure and a bunch of other music apps without knowing any of this stuff, but ultimately, you'll be a better musician and songwriter if you know a little bit about what makes music work. we'll be looking at how Figure handles tonality today. Lesson 4
Tweaks Upload your project to SoundCloud with a descriptive post (100 points) Figure allows you to automate or tweak some of the parameters to help shape the sound over time, or allow for some flexibility in adjusting what the instruments sound like. After watching the video, you'll need to create your own 8-bar project with drums, bass and lead using some tweaks. You'll also need to write a descriptive post on SoundCloud along with your music file. Your post should describe what you did. Include the names of the sounds you used and why you chose them. Did you change the key? The tempo? if yes, then include your reasons for doing so in your post. Part of this assignment is about tweaking some of the sounds available.
